Pattern:
Round 1: With Yarn A, make a magic circle. Ch 1. Work 8 sc into circle. Sl st into first sc st (skipping over the ch 1 from beg of round). FO. (8 sc).

Round 2: Ch 1 (counts as first sc), ch 2 more for 3 chs total. [Sc into next st, ch 2] rep until end of round. Sl st into first ch 2 sp to join. FO. (8 sc and 8 ch 2 sps)

Round 3:
- Attach Yarn B into any ch 2 sp. Ch 3 (first dc), work 3 tc and 1 dc into that same sp.
- Into each ch 2 sp around, work: (dc, 3 tc, dc).
- Sl st to join top ch of first st. Do not FO. (5 sts in each ch 2 sp – 40 sts around)

Round 4:
- Add st marker into last sl st of prev round to mark the start.
- Sl st into the next 4 sts along petal to bring you to the last dc of group.
- Once at sp between petals, insert hook into the ch 2 sp below from round 2 and complete next sl st.
- [Sl st into next 10 sts, work another sl st into the ch 2 sp from round 2 between the petals] 3 times.
- Sl st into the final 5 sts. Into the st with st marker, pull loop on hook through to back. FO.

Adding French knots to the Centre of Poppy
Note: You can leave your poppy as is with the black centre, or follow the instructions below to add yellow to the centre of your flower using the French knot embroidery stitch.
- Thread 20” yarn end through tapestry needle using Yarn C. Pull needle up through the centre of the flower (through magic circle). Leave a small tail at the back of work.

Note: I will be making 8 French knots; all starting in the centre and finishing into each of the 8 sc from round 1 as indicated below.

- To make the French knot, once the needle has been pulled up, hold yarn taut, and then wind the yarn around the needle twice with needle close to the surface. Keep tension tight and then re insert needle into a sc st from round 1 to pull through to the back again.

- Continue to make 7 more French knots into remaining sc sts of round 1.

Weave in ends and that’s it! If you would like to turn this into a granny square, check out my YouTube tutorial or written ad-free PDF pattern version for this poppy 🙂
