Visual Clover Granny Square Pattern:
Below is the pattern broken down into visual steps for those who are more visual learners. There is also just the written pattern at the end of this post for those who would prefer that 🙂
Round 1:
Starting with Yarn A and a 4mm hook, make a magic circle. Ch 2. Work 12 hdc into the circle. Sl st into first hdc (skipping over the ch 2 from beg of round). Pull tail to close circle. Do not FO. (12 hdc)

Note: Each leaf of the clover is worked over 3 sts. Sts with the (…) are to be worked into the same st/sp.
Round 2:
- Ch 2, (tc, dc) back into same st. Sc into next st, (dc, tc, ch 2, sl st) into next st to create first leaf.

- [Into next 3 sts, work: (sl st, ch 2, tc, dc), sc, (dc, tc, ch 2, sl st)] 3 times.

- Sl st back into first st. Do not FO. (44 sts around including chs and sl sts)

Round 3:
- Ch 4, colour change to Yarn B by pulling loop through Yarn A loop on hook. FO Yarn A (hold ends securely so colour change doesn’t become loose).

- *Dc into bl of first ch up side of leaf, hdc into bl of next ch. Sc into bl of next 2 sts.

- Hdc into both loops of next st (to define indent on leaf).

- Sc into bl of next 2 sts. Hdc into bl of first ch, dc into bl of next ch.

- Sk sl st at base of leaf. Into both loops of next sl st that starts the next leaf, work a dc.

- Rep from * 3 more times as per the below diagram.

- Once at beg of round, sk over the ch 4 of the stem at beg of round to sl st to join the first dc st. Do not FO. (40 sts around)

Round 4:
- Ch 2 (first hdc), hdc into next st, dc into next 2 sts, (tc, ch 2, tc) in next st to form corner.
- [Dc 2, hdc 5, dc 2, (tc, ch 2, tc)] 3 times.
- After last corner, dc 2, hdc 3 to finish round.
- Sl st into top ch of first st to join. (11 sts on each side of square for total of 44 around – not including the corner chs)

Round 5:
Attach Yarn C by pulling loop through Yarn B loop, pull tails to tighten. FO Yarn B. Ch 3 (first dc). Dc into next 4 sts. * (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner sp. Dc 11 across until next corner sp. Rep from * until end of round. Round should end with dc 6 after last corner is made. Sl st into top of first st to join. FO. (15 dc on each side – 60 dc around)

You can choose to be done here or continue on to the next step to add an outline to clean up the outline of your clover!
Clover Outline (Optional):
As an optional detail to clean up the clover outline, you can sl st on the surface of your square following the stitches of round 2 to outline the clover. See steps below for detailed instructions:
- Insert hook into the starting sl st of round 2 (where tapestry needle is showing). Pull up a loop of Yarn A.

- Sl st into the blo of the 2 chs going up the leaf.
- Sl st into blo of the next 2 sts.
- Once you get to the indent of the leaf, sl st into both loops.
- Continue to work in the blo for the remaining sts of the leaf.

- Sl st into bl of the chs going back down leaf.
- Sl st into both loops of first sl st at base of leaf.
- Work next sl st into the st from round 1 that the next clover leaf starts in.
- Sl st into both loops of the sl st that starts the next leaf.

- Cont to sl st along the outline following the prev steps. Once at beg of round, sl st back into first st and pull loop to back to FO.
