About
My name is Alyssia from Alyssia Creates! I am a crochet designer and content creator. I have always loved being creative from a young age and started crocheting when I was 10 years old with the help of my Grandma. As I got older, I remained interested in all things creative, even pursuing photography in college after not knowing what to do with my life. Then as I entered my 20’s, I felt drawn to share and bring my ideas to life through designing crochet patterns, creating tutorials and showing the behind the scenes process of my work. Which is where I am currently at now!
My Story
How did I get to where I am at now?
It all starts when I was about 8 years old where I initially showed an interest in sewing – I absolutely loved making my stuffed animals clothing and then when I was about 10, I learned how to knit and crochet from the help of my Grandma. I even started a little business at my elementary school where I made custom animal hats and mittens for my friends and some of the teachers even supported my work to get a set for their kids! As I grew up, I still loved all things creative, even pursuing photography in college after not knowing what to do with my life (I am still figuring that out as I go). There was a good stretch of time however in my teen years where I didn’t crochet anymore.
That brings me to my last 2 years of high school where my life had completely turned upside down on me; my dad was diagnosed with Cancer, my family was struggling financially and losing my childhood home, I had multiple herniated discs as result of my congenital scoliosis and I was awaiting back surgery. I felt completely hopeless, I was in pain 24/7 and I could barely walk, but it was nothing in comparison to the pain of watching what my dad was going through; I can’t even imagine the pain he was in. He passed away May 24th, 2018 at 40 years old, a month before my high school graduation. This was a huge turning point in my life. He still had so much life ahead of him and there were so many things he didn’t get to do, which really put mortality in perspective for me. It does not matter how old you are, you really never know, so I knew I needed to take control of my life even though it still breaks my heart that he isn’t here to see the different stages of it.
I was working 2 jobs that summer and started college in the fall while still awaiting back surgery, to say that summer was rough would be an understatement. During this time I found my way back to crochet and that was the best decision of my life, not only because its was therapeutic, but it also helped me find a purpose. I finally got my surgery in April 2019 when I was 18, which instantaneously gave me pain relief. Though I still have back problems to this day, I am so grateful to be where I am at now.
After graduating college and as I entered my 20’s, I felt really drawn to share my crochet projects on social media, which to my surprise, people followed along and seemed to like what I was making! I started off selling custom orders, which was very rewarding at first but quickly burnt me out and I realized it wasn’t really feasible. I was not pricing my items for how much I spent on materials and how much time it took me to make; I continued this for 2 years. However, constantly having items to post helped me build my business and social media presence, so it was worth it. With that said, a lot of people started requesting patterns and at that time, I did not even know how to read a pattern, I just made things from my brain. I knew if I wanted to continue though, this was the route I needed to go. So first, I had to familiarize myself with crochet patterns before I could get into writing, which took me a good year before I felt confident enough to tackle putting a pattern together. As a visual learner, I designed my patterns in a way that I knew I would find helpful, which was with the inclusion of many photos and diagrams throughout the process. I never expected for my patterns to gain the traction that they did and I am so incredibly grateful that they have. Having the ability to work from home doing what I love has been the best possible thing for me while dealing with my ongoing back issues, it allows me to work around my pain and also help my family.
Aside from crochet, I still love photography and like to spend my time outdoors exploring and finding new landscapes and wildlife to photograph. This is truly when I feel my best. I have always been passionate about animals and conserving the environment from a young age; I went vegetarian when I was 10 and vegan at 12 years old (at much dismay of my parents at the time). It was never about health for me though, it’s always been about the animals! See some of my favourite photographs below:
To conclude, I am so incredibly grateful for all the support throughout this journey and I hope to continue to deliver inspiring crochet content in the form of patterns, videos and blog posts. Thank you so much for following along, it means more than I can ever put into words.
